Well I have someone who wants a Resonator and I hardly know anything about them. I'm looking for books or plans or some good websites so I can research the building process for one of these things.

Can someone point me in the right direction?

thanks Serge,

It is good to be back. I have been so busy in my shop that I have not had much time to hang around here. I just finished off a pair of guitars last week and should have another one done this week. I'll post some pics when I have some more time.

Decision time, Josh - squareneck or roundneck, biscuit cone, spider cone or tricone? There's limited information available on the Internet for some types, others aren't too bad. If you mail me I can probably point you in the right direction even if I don't have the information myself.

Hmmm good questions...the only thing the guy told me was that he wanted a "squareneck dobro". I will have to check with him and see what kind of cone he had in mind. I don't know that he has a preference.

I don't know much about the different kinds of cones. I assume they produce different tones? Is one easier to build than another.

Lets say he doesn't have a preference, which one would you recommend?

I have a lot to learn about these things (as I'm sure you can tell). Any help is greatly appreciated.

He's looking for a spider cone. Search on Gary
Drusina or look over at reso-nation.org. He's done a
great article on building a modern-style (post and
baffle) squareneck. You can also get blueprints for a
vintage style (soundwell) drawn up by Paul Beard
from either Resophonic Outfitters or Stew-Mac.
You'll want a Quarterman or the new Beard cones. I
haven't use a Beard cone myself but hear good
things about them.

I'll second what Mike said, Gary's set of articles is the best information you'll find on that style of guitar. I think you have to register on the site to read the articles.
And hello to you too, Mike and Serge. I've been neglecting building just lately - the weather is good so I'm spending far too much time out on the motorcycle!

I just finished building a mahogany reso. It turned out really good. I used a Quarterman cone with a spider bridge and maple saddle. I also used a bone nut. The scale is 24.5 with 12 frets to the body. I am nearly finished with number two - beautiful cherry. Hope this helps.

Thanks guys,

You have given me some places to start looking. I will go through the information and probably be back with some more questions in a few days.

Josh recently finished number 4 and have started numbers 5 & 6. That article Louisiana referred me to on reso-nation helped a lot. I believe the guys name is Gary Dusia or something. Here is a link.
